Infinite Chess Taiwan by Anderson

  •  The FIDE Infinite Chess project has officially been launched in Taiwan by TYCA, along with the establishment of a nonprofit organization, "Infinite Chess Taiwan." TYCA (Taiwan Youth Chess Association) is an organization formed by Taiwan's youth chess players, led by national chess player Aderson. It is dedicated to supporting the growth and skill development of young chess players. During their volunteer work, they encountered many autistic (ASD) children who are passionate about chess but face significant challenges in learning the game. After thorough research, Anderson discovered FIDE Infinite Chess Project.
  • "We are deeply grateful to become part of the Infinite Chess family and to launch this project in Taiwan to support more autistic children. We are also collaborating with the Foundation for Autistic Children and Adults in Taiwan. Through joint efforts, we aim to enrich our experience, bring about positive impacts, and make a meaningful difference in the growth and development of ASD children," said Anderson.

FIDE Infinite Chess Project

  •  The FIDE Infinite Chess project, aimed to teach chess to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), continues to expand throughout the world.
  • The project thrives in 19 countries for more than180 children with ASD and is coming soon to 6 new more
  • Spearheaded by Anastasia Sorokina, Chair of the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess, a pilot project was launched in January 2021 in six countries: Spain, Turkey, France, Gibraltar, South Africa and Norway. Currently, it is already running in 12 countries – Albania, Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Latvia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, and Turkey – and involves 130 children with ASD. Three new partners – New Zealand, Maldives and India – have joined the project in October 2023.
  • From September to December 2023, “Infinite Chess“ students will attend 17 lessons in groups with ASD children only or in inclusive mixed groups. The classrooms are equipped according to FIDE Infinite Chess guidelines.

How FIDE’s Infinite Chess project helps people with autism

  • Five years since its launch, the Infinite Chess project has expanded globally, offering valuable insights to the chess community on its potential to enhance the lives of individuals on the autism spectrum
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that autism affects one in every 100 children worldwide. In 2007, The United Nations General Assembly established April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) to raise awareness and provide opportunities for people with autism not only to survive but also to prosper. In 2019, FIDE answered the call and launched the Infinite Chess project aiming to help children with autism thrive using chess as a vehicle for developing important life skills.
  • What began as a pilot program in 2019 has grown to encompass 19 countries worldwide, including Albania, Latvia,
  •  Today, the project equips autistic individuals with essential life skills through free training and resources, promoting their acceptance and contribution to society.

I am Anderson, the founder of the NPO Infinite Chess Taiwan, as well as the founder and president of the Taiwan Youth Chess Association (TYCA). I am also a chess player representing Taiwan in international competitions.

Chess is an excellent tool for interaction, connecting people from diverse backgrounds. It is a sport without barriers, especially friendly and inclusive for special or unique children, bringing benefits to everyone. I am very excited to have received permission to bring this project to Taiwan.

Every child can learn and thrive.

Is autism a disability or an opportunity? It is challenging, frustrating and sometimes unpredictable, however it is also providing freedom and creativity to manifest in extraordinary ways. Infinite Chess Project's goal is to shift a paradigm and prove that our differences are our strongest superpowers.

Chess is a great activity for children with autism spectrum to pick up critical life lessons, not only give enjoyment, satisfaction and pleasure to these special kids but also improve their physical and mental health. Chess has no limitations, no prejudice, no boundaries. Chess is more than just a game; it is a friend beyond the board.

TYCA has been a non-profit partner of the Yale Model United Nations Taiwan for three consecutive years.

TYCA members not only engage with global issues alongside YALE MUN, but also use this platform to introduce the Taiwan Youth Chess Association to potential future leaders from various countries. In addition to promoting the various benefits of chess, it also showcases the efforts of Taiwanese youth in helping children with autism worldwide. Through YALE MUN, we hope to rally more people to join the Infinite Chess Project

We shared chess with the children, and they entrusted their hearts to us. Through the world depicted by their paintbrushes, they expressed their dreams. Not only did they take us on a tour of Taiwan’s east coast, but they also took us camping by the sea, traveling around the island by train, celebrating a joyful Christmas together, and concluding the journey during the Lunar New Year reunion. For the 2024 calendar, we collectively painted our shared memories.

Parents are the primary companions and caregivers for children with autism. To provide more comprehensive support, TYCA has introduced chess courses specifically for parents. The program aims to encourage children to interact with family members through chess beyond the classroom setting.

As the FIDE Infinite Chess Project continued to help more and more children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), we also received increasing messages from children in need of support. These messages brought us mixed emotions. On one hand, we were thrilled to be able to help more children through chess; on the other hand, we were concerned about our limitations as a youth volunteer group with finite manpower and time. After seeking assistance from the FIDE Infinite Chess Project, we decided to launch the Infinite Chess Project Teacher Course.

The first training session has successfully concluded. In the future courses, we will unite everyone's strength and do our best to sow this seed of kindness. We hope to serve more children and open a small door for them to enter the world of chess.

TYCA Launches Chinese Translation of Autism-Friendly Chess Teaching Guide, Expanding Its Impact

The Taiwan Youth Chess Association (TYCA) has translated the FIDE Infinite Chess Project’s teaching guidelines for children with autism into Traditional Chinese, a project completed over five months. Since launching the "Infinite Chess Project" in May 2023, TYCA has gained recognition from ASD parents and organizations but faced challenges due to a shortage of coaches and language barriers. Led by Anderson Chao, Sebastian Chan, and Angie Chao, the translation aims to make chess education more accessible for ASD children in Taiwan and other Chinese-speaking regions. TYCA plans to digitize the handbook, further innovating its teaching methods to overcome obstacles and provide inclusive learning opportunities.

Thank you to FIDE Infinite Chess for their recognition and coverage of our event.
On December 22, 2024, the Taiwan Youth Chess Association (TYCA) marked a milestone by guiding two children with autism, Kai and Wen, from the Infinite Chess Project to participate in their first open competition, the Taipei National School Cup Team Chess Championship. Despite initial anxiety and challenges during the tournament, TYCA’s dedicated coaches provided emotional support, mock match preparations, and encouragement to help the children navigate the event. Both faced setbacks but overcame their fears, showing resilience and growth. While they didn’t secure wins, their journey was a triumph of courage, teamwork, and perseverance. TYCA remains committed to empowering more ASD children through chess, fostering confidence and development in every step of their journey.

The Infinite Chess Project Launches in Taiwan by Anderson....

2024年11月19日

TYCA has been approved to join the FIDE Infinite Chess Project, making Taiwan the 11th country to participate in this initiative. To date, nearly 25 countries worldwide have come together to help over 150 children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In collaboration with the Chinese Autism Foundation, TYCA is now in its third phase of courses. From initially having one class, we now offer both advanced and beginner classes. The project started with four TYCA youth volunteers and has grown to include 10 main and assistant instructors, along with eight community group volunteers. We have not only established early intervention chess classes for children with autism but also offered three sessions of parent-child chess classes to provide comprehensive care for the children. Concurrently, we have launched parent growth classes to share middle school transition courses and reading companionship. Due to the remarkable success in helping the children, many community groups have requested TYCA to offer more courses to assist more children with ASD. Therefore, TYCA has launched the Infinite Chess Project Teacher Training Course to teach chess knowledge and share experiences of interacting with ASD children during classes. We are currently actively establishing the SOP for the Infinite Chess Project courses. In the future, through the SOP lesson plans, anyone willing can follow the SOP to help children in need, making it more efficient to assist the ASD community across Taiwan. The United Nations has designated April 2nd each year as World Autism Awareness Day. This year’s theme is “Awareness, Acceptance, Appreciation,” which will also be TYCA’s focus this year. Finally, we would like to thank all the benefactors who have helped and guided us along the way, as well as the children and parents who trust us. We welcome volunteers who wish to join us to contact us and walk this journey together.
